Liked the mood it painted. Very post-apocalyptic fantasyworld style. Preordered the sequel that I will probably read in the winter.

A romp, and as someone currently reading a Raymond Chandler the influence is clear and the pastiche very fun.

In a world where magic has disappeared, formerly supernatural beings struggle to survive and seek out potential places where magic might return, and everything that was once run by magic has stopped. It's a grim and gritty place to be, and protagonist Fetch Philips must dig into its seediest niches to track down a vampire he's been asked to find. The setting is unique and while the characters aren't the best-fleshed out I've ever read, they are interesting enough for this noir-style thriller. A good read for the overlap between dystopia fans and readers who love the urban paranormal.

I read this as part of Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon April 2020

For a readathon, this book took me quite a while to read. Yes, I was interrupted by a need to do a couple of chores and such around the house, but I just couldn't lose myself into the story like I was hoping. There was a lot of setting up the world and the history and all that exposition made things drag. There's a reason they say to show don't tell. But, considering how Fetch is telling this story, the exposition also makes sense. We also spend a good chunk of the story learning about how Fetch got each of the four tattoos on his wrist/lower arm. It helps to explain the journey Fetch has been through, but it takes us away from the missing person--well, missing vampire--case that Fetch is working on. So this was a decent read and a decent debut overall. I am intrigued enough to want to pick up the next Fetch Phillips tale, but this wasn't a book that blew me away with how great it is or anything.

I know…I have been “reading” this book for 9 months but it wasn’t exactly the book’s fault. I just realised about 80 pages in that this is going to be quite a heartbreaker and sad story and I really wasn’t in the right mind frame at the time. But now I picked it up again and I finished it. Yay!!!

The beginning was fine, actually. I would pick up the series again, if the 3rd book gets a German release.
