Working my way through the series...and this was definitely the sequel to Deception on his Mind that I had hoped for, since I really wanted to know what would happen to Havers after her actions at the end of that book. She has been demoted and Lynley refuses to work with her on this new murder investigation (two apparently unrelated people murdered in two different ways). However, satisfyingly for those like me who really like the character, she is the successful investigator while Lynley is off in a mistaken direction. His actions lead to another death, heartbreaking! and to an examination of his own emotional state. Very satisfying.

Coming in at number ten in the series, this one took a whole different tack. While I was completely annoyed with the fact that Lynley and Havers were on the outs, I can't deny it was an interesting story as a result. Having three people involved in the case doggedly pursuing different suspects was a truly interesting twist. So many little twists within the twists, too. I have to say that I read this one faster than the others... if only to get to the reconciliation between the two detectives. Though, I have to say that Lynley's pigheadedness has rather put me off him a bit... I'd better get to that next one soon so that he can hopefully redeem himself in my eyes!

George is an expert and weaving intricate, detailed tales that often lead in every direction as indeed police investigations often do. In this case, I have to wonder about her research regarding the world of domination and S&M, as well as escorts!

This book kept me guessing the whole way through. There were a lot of moving pieces to keep up with. I love the complexity of the characters’ relationships with each other. The only reason it wasn’t a 5 star for me was because the motive for the murder seemed a little bit of a letdown to me. But it was an enjoyable read nonetheless.

i have to admit, there is only so much elizabeth george i can read at a time. I couldn't finish this one... A young woman goes out hiking and ends up murdered, along with an artist from London. I was really shocked at the way that Lynley acted towards Havers, she had to do what she did in the last book to save the girl. I can't believe he would hold that against her. Unfortunately, these books are just too long and dense and I'd read too many too close together to be able to finish.

Couple things.
I selected this book while feeling nostalgic about mysteries while browsing the abundantly stocked shelves of a new (to me) used book store. Moving through the genre-d shelves I reminisced about how Nancy drew mysteries were the first novels I got into as a kid and I remember a scene from 2nd grade, sitting in the classroom at school with a Nancy drew in tow.
I have about a hundred pages left in this book but the past few days, I found myself trying to binge the rest just to be done with the book so that I can move on to something more meaty and enjoyable. So I guess bottom line is, the book isn’t bad, it isn’t poorly written either, it is what it is… and it just doesn’t grab me. Characters feel thin… and this might be the result of choosing book 10 in a long book series, that thing that happens with serialized drama where you have to sit through so many extra hours to get a sense of the characters depth? Character development often seems to me to be problematic.
