It was interesting and I was leaning more to 3 ⭐ but the last hundred pages changed my mind.
Disturbing but not that much, something was missing to make this a thrilling read.

OH MY GOD
OH MY GODDDDDDD
This was creepy, nasty, and so compulsively readable that I finished it in one sitting. 4.5 stars!
I was hooked from page 1 and was absolutely here for this revolting premise of a husband and wife killing together to get their rocks off. But don’t assume that’s all there is to it: there are twists and red herrings galore and the story goes to places I couldn’t have ever anticipated.
Millicent is an absolutely FUCKED character - she’s so fucked that Amy from Gone Girl could only hope to be this calculating! I particularly loved that we only experience Millicent through husband’s eyes. So much of this story hinges on things that they don’t tell each other, and Samantha Downing uses that “unknown” quantity super effectively to help build suspense. Hell, we don’t even know the main character’s name!
I also really enjoyed the tight geographical setting: the whole book takes place within a gated community. This physical boundary and the limited number of locations used really adds to the suffocation and suspense.
Admittedly the ending was far too rushed and I needed more time at the climax, which bumped this down to 4.5 stars.
That being said......THAT FINAL PAGE!!!!

One of my favorite thrillers and it might be one of my new favorite books of all time. It was a slow burn at times, but all of the small details come together in the end as their own puzzle pieces in the story.

I could not stop listening to this audiobook!
So I fully guessed all the twists (I didn't trust Millicent for a second and the eye drops and innocent sister were so obvious) but now I'm confused like what does that last line mean?? was he actually guilty??

Loved: the children and the main character’s attempt at devotion to them.
Didn’t love: anything else much. This book dragged on so long, I was tired of it and its similarities to Gone Girl by the unsatisfying end.
