Great beginning to the manga. The parts that drew me in where Matahachi and Oko's relationship...

Rating Update 4/7/19- 4 stars to 3 stars. Matachi and Oko's relationship doesn't take up much of the volume but the fight scenes and chase scenes do. I weren't too thrilled about the latter.

Update
With the adoption of my new rating system, a two star rating is befitting. The original review and rating update from April 7, 2019, conforms to the new rating system. I cannot find a synopsis of the issues in this volume online to properly assess the rating of this volume. A two star rating seems like the safe rating for now, since I cannot recall the contents of this volume and because the rating update from April 7, 2019, states that the fight scenes took up more of the volume than sections of Matachi and Oko's past.

3.25 stars. This was a pretty dull first volume, despite all of the flashy fight scenes.

Not my first work read by Takehiko Inoue, but certainly this book is a testament to the talent that Inoue consistently possesses. I did not read or watch Slam Dunk, but I have read Real, and now Vagabond, and man, am I excited that I picked up this manga. We follow Miyamoto Musashi as he travels as a Vagabond in order to become the strongest swordsman, and we see how he uses violence as a way to overcome his childhood trauma. I feel like this story will become more of a hero’s journey and we see Musashi contend with his life decisions as he gets older, rather than it be solely a “battle seinen”.

Vagabond is set during feudal era Japan and a fictional retelling of Eiji Yoshikawa’s prominent novel called Musashi.

Traditional cross hatching and japanese brushwork.

Miyamoto Musashi the legendary two sword style ronin warrior.

Followed by buddhist philosophy of life, mastery, concentration, and will.

This is no manga, but a work of history and art.

Gorier than I am used to but it's a quick and interesting read. It's based on Japanese history and reminds me of the existence of a world very different from my own. Omoishiroi.
