Read for book club & borrowed from my local library.

If I had to sum up this book in one sentence, it would be "hold up...I'm confused." I found so many ideas and moments in this one completely fascinating, but they were never really fully explored or explained. I spent a lot of the book confused (possibly just a me problem) and it all felt a little clunky.

There were so many characters, some which stuck around for a while, but an awful lot who appeared for a bit then disappeared for a large chunk of the book and came back, or just didn't come back at all.

Let's not even begin with the Daeva/daeva/djinn thing, that took me until almost halfway into the book before I realised the difference (?) between them.

Overall, I liked a few of the characters but there was so much time spent on politics and all that kind of royal court bickering/politics that I lost interest (again, could be a me problem as I generally don't enjoy reading about that). There was such an info dump as the world building happened, and even still I have so many unanswered questions and really unclear where, when or why I am.

4.6/5 This book took me a while to get into but once I did, I had a hard time putting it down. The author created a dynamic world of complex politics and a familiar, yet still interesting magic system. This is one of the first books in a while where I actually cared about all the major characters and while I didn’t mean to commit to another trilogy, I’m looking forward to the next two books. Also, I love Nahri’s POV and I want to see more of her personality explored in the next book.
