Calling it halfway through. Somehow this book is both boring me AND stressing me out.

LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! Very original premise, and as a Black girl who has had natural hair and relaxed hair, I was SCARED. I do wish once the climax and twist was revealed, we were able to get more details because it felt like such a quick ending. Besides that, I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for the series!

I had no idea this was suspense but it was a welcome surprise

This story was enlightening, relatable, heartwarming, and gut wrenching. It was an infuriatingly good read that kept me guessing until the end. The only reason I took off a star is because the buildup to the climax was slower than I had hoped, but when it finally got there it did not disappoint.
mysterious
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated

Clever thriller that examines how the toxicity of women being pitted against each other becomes intertwined with societal and workplace dynamics and how we as society perpetuate these challenges.

I did struggle with the changing perspectives that referenced numerous central and non-central characters, making it hard to keep track. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed reading and was pleasantly surprised by the ending.

Now to watch the TV series…

♡ MY REVIEW:

I felt very weird categorizing this book as a mystery thriller because it read more like a literary/realistic fiction novel while reading...
Although I did enjoy the writing, the constant need to drive home the "Black woman struggle" rhetoric was quite repetitive. It was annoying reading about Nella (our main character) and how she wasn't this perfect character, which is great to see in books, but it was hard to root for her at all. I'm not shocked by the ending, and dare I say, I saw it coming just because of how Nella is as an underdeveloped character. She doesn't have any character development, which bothered me the most. Following her throughout the book, she goes through a downward spiral caused by her own shortcomings and other unforeseen circumstances.
All in all, I personally probably wouldn't pick up another Zakiya Dalila Harris book, but I know this book would be jaw-dropping for someone else, but I saw it as a slow-burn, literal/realistic fiction novel about a girl that doesn't stand on business and who is easily swayed into becoming a follower rather than a leader.
