Kind of got off the rails towards the end but all-in-all really enjoyable - and legit thought it was great. It was thought-provoking and engaging and a pretty thrilling debut. I'm not a POC but as a different kind of minority in the workplace it really resonated with me in a lot of ways
Summary: Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she's thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They've only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to Office Darling, and Nella is left in the dust.

Really liked this one. Liked that it started out so normal and then got horror-y with the hair products and turning girls into brainwashed versions of themselves. Also liked the dark ending and seeing the cycle unfortunately continue. Dark and thought provoking. How much easier it may be to let things just wash over you so you can get ahead when really you should let things hurt and potentially not get ahead? Good question
This book’s epigraph: “Black history is Black horror.
—Tananarive Due, Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror”
I’m easily frightened and so I’ve not read many scary books. So, this book was my first horror noire and I can see it adapted into a television series or a movie.
I thought it grappled with the themes of identity, assimilation, among others, in a thought provoking manner.
I initially started reading this to be one of my February reads, but Miss Rona, her bad azz chirren and my neurodiversity conspired against me.
I picked it up again Friday, reading off and on. Saturday, I couldn’t put it down until I finished it.
This book, without spoilers, was scary without being terrifying. I truly enjoyed the scare.
Imagine if this were real. Yikes!

I enjoyed this story, start to finish. I’m really glad it wasn’t spoiled for me because I felt on the edge of the mystery the whole time - “Who is behind this? What is going on here?” It pulled me along at a fast clip. Such a smart book…the perspective…the satire and creepiness. Significant but also fun.

Just as this book was starting to get really good it ended! Best part was the epilogue! But still a fun read
