This was my first book by A.J. Skelly and it definitely won't be my last! A.J. Skelly is a great story teller! Well that and the fact that I need to know what will happen next especially after the cliffhanger at the end! Even though the characters are teens which is a little young for me and it is the classic werewolf story it is still interesting and entertaining. The world that the author has created is unique and one that will be interesting to see develop over the series. Overall a great read!

This was a really sweet and clean wolf shifter story.
So how does one accidentally bite, someone? LOL Easy enough! Sam and Megan are at a football game and as they are thinking about kissing each other someone pumps into Megan and Same and Megan's heads collide. Resulting in his teeth on her forehead. Poor kids! What a trivial way to change their lives forever. The bad part is that It's TOTALLY against pack rules to change a human, especially when you are your alpha father's beta.
What follows is a very sweet romantic story, nothing comes easy, and to put the cherry on top is another pack seems to have it out for the Wolfe pack and Megan.
I really enjoyed this story with a HEF with just enough loose strings for book 2. Book 2 follows another couple in the pack and I'm excited to read their story too.

Update: 10/23 - it’s even better after having read the entire series! Going back to book one is like getting a hug from a friend you haven’t seen in ages!

I had such a great time reading this books! I found myself thinking about it while at work and excited to find out what happened next. While I’ve not read a ton of paranormal fiction (a lot of them are not my jam with the steam/spice levels) this one really fun!

It was a little hard to get into, as you’re literally dropped right into the world and the action starts right away. But once you’re in, you’re invested and it’s really hard to put the book down! I ordered book two before I’d even finished the first

I love reading books that are so engrossing that I can’t put them down, and that was certainly the case with First Shift. Because this was my first time reading a werewolf book (I can hear the sparkly vampire fans gasping from here), I wasn’t sure what to expect while reading First Shift. But I absolutely loved it!

Right from the beginning, AJ Skelly draws you into this action-packed yet sweetly romantic werewolf story. Skelly does a fantastic job of weaving details into her story so that you feel like you’re right there with Sam and Meg and the rest of the characters - experiencing everything they are experiencing and feeling what they are feeling.

Reading this book makes you immediately feel like you’re a part of the wolf pack. And that’s exactly how a book should make you feel, whether you’ve read it one time or 25 times. Or more. No judging here.

If you love werewolves, read this book.
If you love young adult fiction, read this book.
If you love (slightly spicy) clean romance novels, read this book.

You will be glad you did. And if you’re like me, you’ll be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!

I think this book could work really well for a more teenage audience. It's not functioning for me as something for an adult audience. Some teenage targeted books are also enjoyable for older audiences, this one is not. Just not feeling connected to the characters or their struggles. The main hindrance in the plot is (spoiler) the main FMC doesn't want to become a werewolf, but she's mates with the MMC who is a werewolf. There's no real stakes in whether they get together or not.

First Shift Review Notes
1. (13% finished, pg 44) The POV shifts so often that it feels like the author should just write from 3rd omniscient instead of limiting themselves to first. Even in omniscient, they could share what each character is thinking or feeling in separate paragraphs without throwing off the reader. Every time the narrative gets to something interesting in a particular POV, the author switches. It’s not functioning as an intentional device.
2. (13% finished, pg 44) Every time Sam’s hair is mentioned, the author uses the full description “shaggy blond hair” or “dark blond hair” which was annoying. Just say his hair. Maybe every 50-75 pages remind readers that it’s blond. (30% finished, pg 100) This continues every time Meg notices Sam. I get that he is blond and has shaggy hair.
3. Something overall just bothers me about Meg’s nickname from her grandpa, but that’s a personal issue. Idk why it bothers me.
4. (30% finished, pg. 100) Marriage of convenience trope. IDK, I am a sucker for a good “marriage law” fic for whatever reason, but this one isn’t doing it for me. I’m starting to think there are too many tropes for the author to handle in one narrative.
5. (37% finished, pg 122) I am bored out of my mind. There are some interesting things going on, but there’s also a lot of focus on stuff that doesn’t seem to have any connection to the plot at all. I’m going to have to DNF this book. I just can’t get into it.

This was so good!!! I’ve had my eye on this book for months and it did not disappoint. I would’ve devoured it in a day if it weren’t for adulting. XD

The story wastes no time getting down to the nitty gritty as Megan is accidentally bitten by her friend Sam Wolfe. It’s clear in the beginning they’d started developing feelings for the other, but unfortunately there are laws that forbid werewolf/human relationships.

The story then takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions as Megan learns to cope with life as a werewolf. When it’s revealed she is also Sam’s mate, Megan must choose between going back to being human after the first full moon following her change and lose her relationship with Sam OR accept that she might have fallen in love and stay forever with Sam as a werewolf.

A few things to look forward to:
• Fake dating
• Marriage for convenience
• and “oh god they were roommates!” ;)

All my favorite tropes rolled into one book!

The story ends on a bit of a cliffy. There is definitely more to come in this world as the Wolfe pack readies to defend their home against a new enemy in town, which puts the entire human race and werewolf population at risk of annihilation.

I said it once but I’ll say it again: I loved this story and all of its characters. Especially Sam and Megan and Megan’s best friend Rachel (she gets extra kudos for being the ultimate BFF!) I’ve already preordered my physical copy of this book. I can’t wait to read Sam and Megan’s story all over again.

DNF at about 20%

I just can’t go on. It is so bad. The dialogue sucks. It is all tell and no show. So many cliches as well. The grammar is bad. I can see 12 year olds liking this but definitely not for me.
