A Good Day to Pie by Misha Popp

Tasty, feminist, fantasy mystery.  Just as with the first, I was completely sucked in as soon as I started reading. The vigilante theme surrounding abusive men pushes it out of the 'cozy' mystery slot, but there is still so much wholesomeness and compassion to enjoy.
I was really concerned the reality tv/cooking challenge show angle for this book in the series would have me disliking it, but it ended up being a fun element and a way to meet new characters.
I love the candidates who are supportive of each other, and how Daisy checks in with everybody regardless of whether they've behaved well.
I was struck by how the author uses the protagonist POV to express appreciation for the skill and artistry involved in all kinds of different baking (not just Pie Girl's pies).
I think the mystery and magic in this series comes secondary to the interpersonal, encompassing both drama and character development, but it has a lightness to it that stops the messaging from being heavy-handed.
Eagerly awaiting my library's acquisition of the third in the series, out this year!
⚠️Abuse, sexual harrassment, allusion to SA, discussion of assisted suicide

This book was so much better than the first in my opinion! I love competition shows so this was definitely up my alley. I appreciate the short chapters, it felt like I read way more that way. I also loved all the new characters and was glad there was a whole new set of characters because honestly I didn’t really like the characters from the first book. I actually already guessed the murderer pretty early on and it was obvious who would win the competition. Daisy does bother me sometimes… like I get she is the main character but she inserts herself wayyy too much. Like chill lady. She definitely should have been booted off the competition earlier on lol she was too lucky in making it so far. Also I believe she is supposed to be in her early 20s but honestly her character should be older like in her 30s lol. I did feel like the ending came abruptly and was disappointed in how it ended. Like all it took was that to make the murderer confess?!? Why didn’t she do that earlier. I also wished there was more magic in this book. Anyways it was a good comfort read after a few intense books.

A GOOD DAY TO PIE is the second book in the Pies Before Guys Mystery series by Misha Popp. Who knew that a magical murderer could provide so much laugh-out-loud entertainment?! Of course, the victims are all greatly deserving of their fate, so it’s difficult to feel any sympathy for them. In this newest release, the protagonist, Daisy, is participating in an American version of The Great British Bake Off. Stunned to find out one of the judges is on her “hit list”, Daisy isn’t sure how to proceed without her secret life being uncovered. When the judge is murdered by someone else, she decides to investigate to find out which one of the contestants or staff of the event did the deed. In addition to mouthwatering scenes and details about the competition itself, the mystery was filled with twists and turns that kept me glued to the story. I was so thoroughly smitten with the book that I immediately downloaded the first in the series to read the minute I’d finished A Good Day to Pie. While there are lots of cozy elements to the series, this is definitely edgy with language that is emblematic to the age group and the situations.

The narrator, Tanya Eby, did an excellent job portraying Daisy, along with giving the supporting characters their own personalities and voices. I believe she added to the enjoyment of the story with her inflections and delivery.

Thanks to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media, I was provided with an advance audio copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’d give this a solid 3.5.

I love a good mystery…and pie, so I jumped at the chance to read this. The mystery aspect was good, and I really liked the different characters introduced. It was a great variety of personalities that worked well. And I think that the mystery definitely left some breadcrumbs to follow for nearly everyone involved, so that by the time the ending came around, the killer could’ve been several people.

I have two critiques. First, while I loved the mystery aspect, it was almost drowned out by the details of the contest. It was essentially like listening to The Great British Bake-off. I understand that it’s important to include details to give it a bit of reality, but it was too much for me. Secondly, and just a personal issue, the narrator mispronounced a few words, and it took me out of the story. If it were once, it would be fine, but unfortunately, when it happened, she would repeat the word a few lines later and it would just caused a knee jerk reaction for me.

Not a bad book, especially if you’re a big fan of GBBO.

Just a solid cozy mystery. Set on a TV show like “Great British Bake Off” with a diverse cast of characters (Ace and Trans character!)

What a fantastically fun book! I started out with book one in the series, and I have to admit I wasn’t really sure what to think of it. I did like it, but the main character is definitely something different. She’s likeable, fun, a fantastic baker and a murderer. How do you root for someone like that? I’m still not sure how, but Ms. Popp has succeeded in getting me to love a complete sociopath.

In this second book, Daisy has entered into a British Bake Off type show, and as a major fan of that show I was delighted! It’s like having a behind the scenes look but with more murder. The baking descriptions are delicious and the side characters are varied. It is an excellent cozy mystery. I’m sure I will be coming back to read it again, which says a lot because I usually don’t come back to mystery books once the mystery has been solved. It’s just too fun to miss out on reading this book again. I’m looking forward to any new books in the series to come.
