This was my book 12 out of 20.

I feel somewhat bad including this but the fact that I listened to 4 hours of this book should be reason enough to count as consumed material. All I can say is that this book is disturbing. I jumped into this book believing that it would be interesting if not exactly enriching but what I encountered towards the 4 hour mark is sheer evil. The fact that the author believes that skillfully murdering a man's will to live sans the presence of the seducer is so devilish. In the comments of this audiobook, many mentioned how this book is devil-like and so cold and manipulating and although towards the beginning, I was quite interested in this book- I could spot out all the Dandies I know and identified my type as the Ideal Lover- the middle (I guess around when he thought he lost all the "good" readers) this book becomes jarring. Like, I don't even understand what's artistic or seductive about a guide on how to destroy someone from the inside out and how to get them addicted to you. It's actually such a pitiful book. Truly unfortunate.

That being said, I love how he deeply analysizes influence and power which is why the next book I'm reading is Mastery by him. I just think that this book is not for me, but hopefully the next book will be because I absolutely adore his ability to breakdown successful people in their techniques but manipulation is not for me. Mastering subjects is, so hopefully that'll be my next favorite read.

TL;DR: How to Manipulate People into Becoming Addicted to You and How to Have No Fundamental Relationships 101

There is two different ways that this book conveys its message. Through lessons and examples. The examples were my favourite part of this book. I loved learning about how different historical and literary figures used certain tactics to their advantage. However with every exaple came a lesson. These, while necessary for what the book was trying to do, were repetitive, boring and redundant once you had heard the example. I also think that the book could have been more clear in the beggining about the interpretation of the word seduction. This book sees seduction as a tool to get people to do what you want. I think a lot of people would have different interpretations. This would have benefited by having made it clear in the introduction what was to be expected.

Part history book, part “cunning, amoral instructions for and analysis of this fascinating, all-pervasive form of power” (Goodreads’s description, not mine), Greene presents an impressively thorough review of both sexual and nonsexual seduction throughout history. Between synopses of the seductive lives and tactics of figures such as Cleopatra, John F. Kennedy, and Joséphine Bonaparte, the author provides twenty-four steps to effectively seduce eligible “victims” (the author’s language, not mine). Does it sound gross? Yeah, it is.

About halfway through this book, after being troubled by the manipulative language used to describe how to gain power over those around you, my perspective changed. I read a chapter in which I recognized a way in which I had been manipulated in the past, and I realized that this book has a tertiary purpose: to learn how to avoid being manipulated. From that point on, the book read like a villain monologuing in a superhero movie. As disturbing as it may be, listen to them to learn how to thwart them. Or, if you are so inclined, use the information to write your own villain; their manipulative power will be unmatched. That being said, this book does provide compelling insight into the reasons and ways that people are drawn toward each other, for better or for worse. I would recommend this book ONLY to those determined to manipulate for good. Is that possible? If you figure it out, let me know.

Interesting from a psychological perspective, but the tone leaves a lot to be desired.

toxic book for toxic people
