I loved the enchanting old-fashioned illustrations and the simple story! My 8&9 year old boys loved it and at then end when the cat, dog, and mouse became helpers, they said that I had two great helpers (cue them both grinning at me)! It was very sweet!!

I love the illustrations in this telling of the story. Ella has requested this for bedtime two nights in a row. She’s familiar with the story from reading in the Treadwell Primer and is enjoying memorizing and learning to read the story in a more expanded form here.

24/3/16 update: I've re-read this for my reading activities focus in year 1. I have chosen this because my class don't really know fairy-tales and think Ben 10 is a fairy-tale - I know, I was shocked too!
Last week's focus was Chicken Licken and I thought I'd keep within the same family and focus next week's activities (after half-term) on Little Red Hen. I have also chosen this because we are focusing on questions as the SPAG focus and this book is filled with SPAG focus, which will help reinforce what a question.
I re-read the big book and I was pleased that this had a different ending to what other retellings had.

I first read this when I was in primary school and I still remember it, which is a testament to its writing and interesting story-lines.

For: fairy tale/folklore fans; readers looking for a classic retelling that is accessible for young readers.
Possible red flags: laziness/sloth; feeling underappreciated.

This stay at home mom loves this classic children's story about a mama hen that always does all the work by herself and finally decides to reap all the reward by herself, too. This is a great story for children who naturally take advantage of their parents. Being appreciative and helpful are values that are not always natural and must be taught.
