hard to put into words the meaning this book imprinted on me. one of my favorite passages:

“i have a gift for mothering. all i do is mother people. i want to be a mom so bad that i make everyone my children. other trans girls. men too, actually. sometimes when i think back on amy—ames—i think she fell in love with me because i mothered her as much as i dated her… as a child, i needed so badly. when someone could meet that need, it was beautiful. it was the proper place for mothering. now i need that proper place for myself” (178).

Ames is going to be a father, his boss/girlfriend informs him one day in her office. The only problem is that Ames who used to be Amy who used to be James cannot imagine himself, who used to be a trans woman, as a father. That’s when Ames proposes a daring solution: Ames will be a father for his and Katrina’s child IF Katrina will consent to Ames’s old flame, Reese, being another mother to their child. Reese who is still a trans woman and who has always dreamed of being a mother. Reese who Ames still loves. Will the 3 of them come together and make a family or will jealousy and misunderstandings tear them apart?

An intriguing premise, this story explores in which ways trans women are the same as and different than their cis counterparts.
