A heart-rending story of a young boy's survival during the Second Sudan Civil War. And to learn that this was based on Salva's real experiences is so sad. There are some very tough depictions of violence and death, but a heartpounding account of survival. A great read for middle grade. Can be pared with When Stars Are Scattered or I Will Always Write Back.

Inspiring and educational, this book should be read by everyone.
I only wish it were longer. I feel like I know just the main events in Salva’s life, and I wish some parts weren’t as rushed.

What a fascinating story on a time period and country I knew absolutely nothing about. This book has definitely peaked my interest into learning more about this topic. I was skeptical at first, because I was not sure that Linda Sue Park should be the one writing this story (and honestly I'm still not sure that she is), but she definitely did a lot of research and since Salva is a close personal friend to her, it didn't feel icky.
