A heart-rending story of a young boy's survival during the Second Sudan Civil War. And to learn that this was based on Salva's real experiences is so sad. There are some very tough depictions of violence and death, but a heartpounding account of survival. A great read for middle grade. Can be pared with When Stars Are Scattered or I Will Always Write Back.
Moderate: Gun violence, Grief, Racism, War, Xenophobia, Violence, Physical abuse, Murder, and Death
Minor: Abandonment
