When builders discover a human skeleton while renovating a café, they call in archaeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway, who is preoccupied with the threatened closure of her department and by her ever-complicated relationship with DCI Nelson. The bones turn out to be modern--the remains of Emily Pickering, a young archaeology student who went missing in 2002. Suspicion soon falls on Emily's Cambridge tutor and also on another archeology enthusiast who was part of the group gathered the weekend before she disappeared--Ruth's friend Cathbad.

As they investigate, Nelson and his team uncover a tangled web of relationships within the archaeology group and look for a link between them and the café where Emily's bones were found. Then, just when the team seem to be making progress, Cathbad disappears. The trail leads Ruth a to the Neolithic flint mines in Grimes Graves. The race is on, first to find Cathbad and then to exonerate him, but will Ruth and Nelson uncover the truth in time to save their friend?

An enjoyable end to the Galloway series with lots of nods to previous books in the series. There was probably too little Cathbad for me as he's my favourite character by far but at least there was plenty of talking about him. I'll miss these books but her new series with Harbinder Kaur is brilliant so there's plenty to look forward to...

The end of an era. If this truly is the end for our jouney with these characters who feel like family, then this was perfection. My husband and I started this series back in 2016. I don't remember how I discovered it. We both read them at the same time and discussed daily the goingson in Norfolk. We blasted through 8 of her books within a year to catch up. We chose our 2017 honeymoon to be a trip to London and Norfolk so we could visit some of the places Griffiths describes. We went to Titchwell Marsh to see a similar one to Ruth's beloved land. The Chalk Pit had just came out, so I rented a car and drove us to Norwich for a day. This series has been a part of every big and small moment in my life. I read it in the hospital while my dad was sleeping during his cancer treatment and while nursing and rocking my babies back to sleep in those wee hours of the night. Thank you, Elly, for gifting us this Norfolk family. With all their flaws, all their frustrating choices or lack thereof, we love them.

Loved this entire series. A satisfying finale!

Sadly the 'last' in the series. It was a joy to spend time with these wonderful characters again. As always East Anglia provides real atmosphere for a cold case. You will have to read it to see how Elly brings together the tangled web they have weaved over a long series of books.

This is the last of the Dr Ruth Galloway mysteries and although can stand alone would be best read when you have read them in order!

I really really liked this one, one of the best in a while. I’m not that bothered by the Nelson/ruth drama - I like the mystery much more, but it was also nice to get a solid resolution on that finally

This book was everything I had hoped it would be. Moments from all (or at least most) of the previous fourteen novels were mentioned in such a loving way. These characters I adore were all treated with such affection. I don’t know if the author still loves these characters, but I certainly do. It made me happy that she says she is taking a break from Ruth, not ending her story altogether. But either way, this was a perfect ending.

Love this series and this book was also enjoyable
