This has not ended up being a favourite instalment, I much preferred the last book as a comparison; however I did like the ending a lot, and I still really like this crime/archaeology series. The Last Remains focuses on the 20-year old bones of an archaeology student, found in a local cafe as it was being renovated. Once again there are lots of unlikely coincidences between characters - the remains being those of an archaeology student at a college Ruth used to teach at; and an unlikely connection to Cathbad who becomes a suspect; but there’s also a genuinely good conclusion to the mystery, which isn’t too obvious, although I’m unsure it was really guessable with what the reader had to go on, either. The main element I liked was the continued family dynamics between Ruth and Nelson. I really enjoyed the introduction of Ruth’s sister Zoe into the last book but she had a disappointingly small role in this instalment. Overall a pleasant and quick read but just not my favourite.

Gosh this was a really good one! It feels like it’s the last book of the series.
SIGH
Now what do I read?? Any suggestions?

I’m truly sad that this is the end to the Ruth Galloway mysteries. This series has always brought me joy. every time a new book would come it was like being with old friends but it has been about 13 years and it was a great ride. Every book was awesome and I’m hopeful that in the future there will be a few more to follow.

A good ending to the Ruth Galloway series, but I am sad to see them go. This has been a truly wonderful series. I love Ruth and Nelson and Cathbad and Judy and I’ll miss them.
