How can they really be still together? She's a wraith.. I dunno this book wasn't the greatest. Good but not like the previous.

I'm not sure how I feel about this series after rereading it completely. I loved it as a teenagers, really loved it. But reading it again as an adult has left me feeling somewhat dissatisfied. I can't put my finger on what or why.

Gray's writing still captivated me the way it did the first time around. The emotions where still heart wrenching. But there's just something about the ending and resolution that doesn't feel quite right. I'm not sure whether it's something to do with Bianca's ghostly form or certain loose ends (Charity, Vic, Raquel, Black Cross) not being tied up entirely.

I'd probably give the 4-stars, if I'd read this for the first time now, but I always honour my original rating.

A few reasons why I didn't think this book was all that and a bag of chips...

It didn't feel like the final book in the series. It didn't have that air of finality that [b:Last Sacrifice|6527740|Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy, #6)|Richelle Mead|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1311706040s/6527740.jpg|13385418] or [b:Mockingjay|7260188|Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)|Suzanne Collins|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1294615552s/7260188.jpg|8812783] (and yes, I understand that they are all different books to compare).

None of the characters changed much during the course of 4 books. And I'm not talking about their undead (or lack thereof) state. Character development is pivotal if you're writing a series. I don't care how long or short said series is.

I felt like Claudia Gray threw too many things into this book. I could barely keep up with the shockers. She really should have had an additional book.

I still enjoyed this series. It's one of my favorite Paranormal YAs. 3 out of 4 isn't so bad on the grand scheme of things.

I found the series to be tedious sometimes, but I loved the first book, and I liked how Afterlife ended up. A satisfying ending.

The story continues right where the cliffhanger in Hourglass ended. Things aren't getting any easier for Lucas and Bianca. She's a wraith and Lucas is a vampire—the very thing he would prefer to die than become. Now they both have to come to terms with their own Afterlives. Lucas need to learn how to control his bloodlust and the only place that can help him is Evernight Academy, which is the worst place for a powerful wraith like Bianca.

"Classes start in two weeks," I said. "At Evernight. You're going to go back there."
Lucas stared at me for a second, then thumped his head against one of the wine racks so that the bottles rattled. "Great. I'm already hearing things. Halfway to crazy."

One thing I really enjoyed, but never really thought I'd want to know before I knew were the reasons behind Mrs. Bethany's actions. I'll never agree with her methods, but I understand her more.

Mrs. Bethany's proud face never changed, but I saw something I'd never expected to see: her eyes filling with tears.

They is never a dull moment in this book and when it seems like they don't have enough to worry about, something happens to prove there can always be more. It might not have the perfect ending I wanted, but it was perfect for this story and not improbably wrapped in a neat bow.

The Evernight series was the second YA series I ever read and one of the reasons I got hooked on series instead of just reading stand-alone books. Claudia Gray has a talent for cliffhangers that leave you on edge and compel you to find out what happens next. The supporting characters are as lovable and developed as the main. I can easily imagine each of them with their own spin-off novels.

Meine Wertung:
4 von 5 Sternen

This review was originally posted at Vampire Book Club.

Before we discuss Afterlife, the final Evernight novel, it’s important to remember where Hourglass (Evernight #3) left us. Claudia Gray did what we would have never imagined and let our lead characters die. Of course, in the paranormal world dead isn’t dead. Former half-vampire Bianca is now a wraith (aka ghost) and her nee vampire hunter boyfriend Lucas has been turned into a vampire, his greatest fear.

I spent the months since finishing Hourglass contemplating how Gray could turn things around. How can Bianca and Lucas move forward? Love can make people overcome insurmountable problems. So, in Afterlife, we find our star-crossed pair fighting for their love as their world comes crashing down.

Bianca has abilities most wraiths do not — she can manifest corporeal form and she can move from place to place with a thought — and the other wraiths want her help. Mrs. Bethany, the Evernight headmistress, is hunting wraiths. So many are captured and going mad inside Evernight’s walls as a result of her seek-and-destroy mission.

Dismissing the wraiths’ requests, she makes her focus Lucas and aiding his adjustment to vampiric life. Her goal is to help him retain who is amid his new bloodlust. And to keep him safe and make this process easier, there is only one place Bianca can take him: back to Evernight Academy.

Now Bianca is hunted. Lucas has to rely on Balthazar, the guy who wanted to be with his girlfriend, and his mom — the leader of the Black Cross — isn’t about to accept her newly vampire son back into the fold.

We’re keeping this one spoiler-free, so we’ll get to the point. Afterlife gives us just what we need: nonstop action, a realistic fight for love and lots of answers. We’re talking why Mrs. Bethany is the like that (oh, you’ll be shocked), why the wraiths wanted Bianca so badly and whether or not Lucas and Bianca will actually make it.

Gray managed to move this story along so quickly with enough turns for minor whiplash, and it works. It has the action I adored in Hourglass and emotional needs and secrets we were first introduced to in Evernight. We promise, Afterlife is a fitting end to the Evernight series.

I figured I finally had to finish this series. I rather wish that I hadn't. Bianca and Lucas are...well...they're a thing.

Vic and Ranulf were the reasons I slogged through this. The end.
