One of my favourite Shakespeare plays. Would be five stars but from a modern perspective it has sometimes not so subtle undercurrents of sexism which I can’t look past. King Lear definitely shows a writer at the height of his powers.

Here for Cordelia/Edgar seeing as they are by far the best characters regardless but I definitely prefer the original Shakespeare

This is a thing...
Fun fact: Did you know this version was the version of King Lear performed for about 150 years? It was and it isn't as good as the Shakespeare version, so unless you have to, I don't recommend reading this.

I never really know how to rate Shakespeare. I’m always inclined to give 4 or 5 stars when I enjoy a story but can I do that if I had to google what every character was saying???

On a side note: I went to see a performance of this play starring Sir Ian McKellen himself. It was INCREDIBLE and he looked me straight in the eyes. I’m not getting over that in a hurry

did i read this? yes. why did i read this? good question. i'm five weeks into a lear hyperfixation. that said - this may shock you - shakespeare did it better. my general opinion on tate's changes are that they're slightly better for cordelia's character, but, like, worse for everyone else's.

I liked it well enough, but it's a lot like the original, except shorter and a tad bit less doomy.
