From the many pulp horror novels I'd have consumed in teenage years, this is one of the most enduringly disturbing.
This was definitely one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read.
Excellently trashy. Incest and transparent anatomical dummies? One-legged paramours? A general feeling of ew? This is your book. Easily done in half an afternoon.
Quite a vacation from sanity and good taste. Picked this up at a ratty used bookstore with a beautiful selection of 80s horror paperbacks, probably subconsciously remembering that Andrew Neiderman = VC Andrews now. And you can see how he got the job in this super-gothic incest horror that's like a perverse new adult M.E. Kerr novel.
Points for romance between a bored paraprofessional librarian and a disabled vet who basically stalks her at her job!

Read about this book in Grady Hendrix’s Paperbacks From Hell and thought immediately: I MUST HAVE IT!!
Weird sex, incest, family dysfunction, and ventriloquism packaged in a surprisingly thoughtful meditation on death and grief. Really enjoyed it and look forward to diving more in Neiderman’s work (probably some of his ghost-writing) and other “paperbacks from hell.”
There’s also a movie adaptation with David Hewlett (Stargate Atlantis!!) that I’m dying to get my hands on.

I'm almost embarrassed that I tore through this not-quite-incestuous-siblings-and-their-anatomical-dummy thriller as quickly as I did. Grady Hendrix's adjective of "pervy" pretty much covers it and the plot progression ain't exactly unpredictable but it was basically impossible for me to keep from turning pages.
This was a very odd story and I enjoyed it a lot. Bad things are bound to happen when you're in love with your sister and your best friend is an anatomical model. There is one part in the book that brought one of my greatest fears to life as I share a particular ailment of someone mentioned in the book. I recommend this one if you love trashy 80's horror.
