I enjoyed the first 2/3 more than the last third. It starts off as a charming mix of Harry Potter and Narnia fan fiction with a distinctive adult edge missing from those books. But it descends in the end into a bit of a clumsy and less-inspired moral-less Narnia rip off towards the end which made me struggle through the last 150 pages or so. It had some really beautiful and interesting nuggets of great writing and if not totally original then at least curiosity-arousing and entertaining plot devices but the character development was wildly uneven/incomplete and I had a sense the author was floundering around at various times. I couldn't make an emotional attachment to any of the characters in the end.

I wanted to like this book but it wasn’t for me. I saw the tv serie and I absolutely loved it, so I was sooo excited to read the books (because usually they’re better then the serie or the movie right?), but I found this book too slow for me. The real action it’s just a scene of two pages at almost the end of the book! The Beast, the main villain, appears just two time and that’s it?! What? Where are the battles?!
I wanted more action and less Q thinking about Alice’s perfect breasts!
Maybe one day I’ll continue the other two books, but for now I’ll stop to this one.

I was really excited to read this because I love the SyFy series, but I was sadly disappointed.

This book is full of misogyny, racism, and ableism. AND IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 2009. It suffers horribly from man-writes-woman.

I also found the MC more unlikeable than he was in the SyFy series. I can’t figure out if that was by design and genius or if it was how the author thinks and distasteful.

I’m so glad SyFy got a hold of this. They really improved the story overall. Don’t bother with the book. Just watch the show.

I still gave it 50/100 because I do like the concept. The characters are meant to be flawed; I love that, but I couldn’t stand the descriptions of female, POC, and plus-sized characters. The plot was really all over the place too.
