I liked this book more as I read more of it, though I admit that I wasn't always completely drawn in; I think I will reread it one day to fit the different vignettes together in my mind more clearly. The book delivers lines that are poignant/sobering as well as laugh-out-loud funny, but as I said I needed to read well into the book before having that response naturally emerge in me, since earlier I felt like the words were too obviously fishing for a certain reaction.
This book was beautifully written. The imagery and metaphor were stunning and spot on. Everything Alexie wrote in this book sounded like flowing lyrics- despite the stories being so somber in nature. It's sad to say that the Native American voice is often lost in today's "popular literature". And I'm very glad to have found this book that better opened my eyes to the Native American culture, struggles, and strength. Also a great read to put my privilege in check.
My favorite story out of this novel was "Imagining the Reservation" which opened with a quote by Lawrence Thorton that perfectly summarized the story. I think it was an important story because while still somber it showed hope. And hope is very important.
Definitely pick this up. It's not too long of a book, and it shows a side of life that so many of us wrongfully forget about. Plus, Sherman Alexie is a cool guy and a fantastic writer.

Once again, Alexie does a good job of storytelling. This is a worthwhile read.

Great book. A collection of short stories centered around life on a Spokane Indian reservation. Bleak at times, with hunger, alcoholism, and poverty, but also contains an air of hope in many of the stories.
Enjoyable, quirky stories. After a while, though, I tired of the depressing life on the rez and moved on.
