Christ, I am still crying over this book.

Atmosphere reminded me why TJR’s novels stick with you long after you finish them. This isn’t just about space. It’s about love in all its forms: the slow-burn romance between Joan and Vanessa, Joan’s bond with her niece Frances, and her quiet devotion to the stars that first called her upward.

This is undeniably a love story, but also about resilience, ambition, and courage. As Joan says, “Bravery is being unafraid of something other people are afraid of. Courage is being afraid, but strong enough to do it anyway.” That courage runs through every page, from women fighting for space in NASA to daring to love in a world that won’t allow it.

TJR’s characters are incredible. Joan’s quiet ferocity, Vanessa’s fire, Frances’s steady brightness. When Joan tells Frances, “You make my life worth something… you can wake up and go to bed knowing there is someone whose heart is bursting, barely able to contain how much they love you,” I ugly cried.

The romance is slow, intense, and devastatingly good. “In all of her time spent watching others, she hadn’t picked up on this part of falling in love — that someone could look at you as if you were the very center of everything. And even though you knew better, you’d allow yourself a moment to believe you were worthy of being revolved around, too.”

And the stars. “Well, we are the stars. And the stars are us. Every atom in our bodies was once out there… To look at the night sky is to look at parts of who you once were, who you may one day be.”
Why not five stars? The opening throws too many characters at you too fast, some side arcs felt underdeveloped, and the ending was slightly predictable.

Still, minor quibbles. TJR reminds us “Just the act of falling in love was to agree to a broken heart,” and makes you feel every beat of it. Bold, tender, and unforgettable.

Atmosphere hit me in every way possible. It’s a love story, a story of courage, and a story about finding your place in the world and among the stars. TJR writes women who burn slow and bright, and this book will stay with me for a long, long time.
