I think my expectations were set a bit too high with this story.. the beginning was a strong start and hooked me. Once Tisaanah sets off on her journey, I found myself slogging through. Many of the minor characters are incredibly forgettable. The world building didn’t feel immersive. Lacked connection with our characters. Like, did Tisaanah have a flaw? Who exactly is
resheah?
Overall, I was underwhelmed.

"Men want power because it makes them feel good. Women want power because it lets us do things.

Tropes:
A strong and righteous female protagonist with a revenge plot
Villains; one of them is within
Grumpy ML & Sunshine FL
“Whenever you go, I’ll come with you”
Slowburn
Duo pov
“Who did that to you?”(but the after violence)

I enjoyed this book.
But there were stuff I was kinda confused with:
-the plot. The beginning was very interesting and until 35% mark, the plot’s pace felt slow. Because of the lack of world building. Again this is my pov. Again I may be dumb but the politics matters were also confusing.
-the magic system itself. So much was happening. So many new terms and explanations and seemed lacking.
-this story was a slow burn. A slow one. They got “together” at around 50/60%(I don’t remember..) we get to see a growth of friendship between and ‘master’ and apprentice to lovers…:
you think I'm functional?"
A dancing smile glinted in his eyes. "I think," he said, "that you are breathtakingly functional."
Honestly? I thought he was breathtakingly functional too. He was the most breathtakingly functional thing I had ever seen.

-I wished they had more “romance” because it felt lacking.
-I like the duo PoV of Tisaanah Vytezic and Maxantarius Farlione.
-this book may be a fantasy but it has some very triggers: rape; slavery; grooming; violence; torture; injury details.
-the only thing that kept me going was T and M’s slow burn romance and T’s ambition to save people from slavery.
-Reshaye. He/it is an interesting character.
even though it is a sentinant, I would like to see more of it… how it will bring destruction through Tisaanah.

The romance: again it was a slow burn. Around 45%, we get glimpses of it. And I was holding on it, because it hurts to read when T never had real loving affection until M: How long had it been, since someone touched me that way? With purposeless affection?

And from max’s pov. We didn’t get to see his feelings about T until the end but there were passages that did say how she affected him:
when I stood behind her, barely touching and yet drowning in her scent and her skin and my own roaring blood Trouble, Max. Trouble.’

And when Reshaye possessed Tisaanah and Max was fascinated by her:
I was no longer looking at a woman I was looking at a fucking goddess. A goddess of death and vengeance and utter, indiscriminate destruction.

What I would like to see more:
-T’s use of butterfly and her illusions powers. As a weilder.
-how Reshaye will be?:
(I understand what it is to want.}
Not to want. To love.
{To love is to want.} The whisper dipped me into darkness.
(I loved Maxantarius very much.]
The bed split beneath me, sending me falling, spiraling.
{Perhaps I could love you, too. What a story we would write together.]
-more of Sammerin and his teasing: "At least if you die, you'll die happy.”
"Fuck you."
"I don't need anyone's leftovers."
-Nura’s growth?maybe? Maybe not.

Together, we burned.

Amazing.
So well written, so many good tropes, interesting main and side characters, an interesting plot - perfect.

I have qualms.  I overall like the story and political intrigue aspects, however the world building has been rather sparse and the magic system is largely unexplained.  It seems to be predominantly will-based with aspects of affinity, but also included "stratgrams" as focii, and also blood pacts because why not?  It was also particularly jarring when part one was all one POV, and then you get to part two and you suddenly have a new POV and you switch back and forth.

I think I will probably continue reading the series because I'm curious about what comes next, but I'm hopeful that there are less grammar/spelling errors and redundant fake swearing ("Ascended above") in addition to real curse words (mainly "fuck/fucking").
