Indians on Vacation follows married couple Mimi and Bird as they set out on a holiday to Prague in search of clues as to what happened to a long-lost uncle and the medicine bundle he took to Europe almost a hundred years earlier. Along their way, a complicated personal and political history is revealed.

Sometimes you go into a book thinking it's going to be one thing and you end up getting something surprisingly different. Indians on Vacation was the novel for me and I couldn't help but enjoy my time spent with Bird and Mimi. Their mishaps along the way (both past and present) felt highly relatable, their bickering seemed genuine, and Bird's grumbling endeared his character to me even more.

While at times I had to stop and figure out where I was in the plot, I felt as though the past and present structure really helped highlight the strengths of this story, as did King's signature sarcasm, which shines through in his writing.

One of the biggest strengths of this novel is how King flawlessly sprinkles subtle bits of social commentary throughout without detracting from the main story. As a reader of was aware of them but they weren't the main focus, which is something I think more books need. And lastly, I appreciated the mental health aspect, again which wasn't the center of the story making in more accessible in a way.

Overall, this was a surprising read that I definitely appreciated more than I first anticipated, and I'll definitely be checking out more of Thomas King's work in the future. I tandem read the physical and audio editions, and highly suggest this immersive experience.

"I can't imagine that anyone likes to see anyone in distress, but as soon as I think this, I remind myself that I'm wrong. For the most part, no one much cares what happens to other people, just so long as it doesn't happen to them. We have the capacity for compassion, We simply don't practice it to any degree."

This book was absolutely delightful as you follow Bird and Mimi through Prague in search of an old family crow bag filled with family artifacts that belonged to one of Mimi's great uncles who went to Europe and never game back in the early 1900's
