Wow. Just wow. Even though this memoir deals with a difficult subject that was so hard to read, Machado has constructed a truly incredible book. If I could have, I probably would have highlighted almost every line of this one. The style, the pacing, the mix of personal experience and scholarship, the just unflinching rawness of it all...speechless.

Machado certainly can write - her prose is mesmerising, she draws the reader into the rarefied, twisted dream world of an abusive relationship. Even when I wanted to scream at her to just get out and dump the abuser, I kept reading, just as unable to stop. Beautiful.
