Yeah, loved it once again.

Re-reading these is so much fun. Knowing what will happen and seeing the little things that will lead to it? Looking forward to it (like the hatching of Iskierka?)? So, so, so much fun and joy (and anticipating heartbreak ;.;).

Love Laurence and Temeraire so much and now we have finally Tharkay and Iskierka too. <3

Looking forward to re-read the next part!

This book has a lot of geographic and narrative ground to cover before it can really get going. While the previous one benefitted from taking its time with that journey, this one I think suffers from eliding some but not all of it. That said, I don't really see how she could have done otherwise, and she does deliver both a sense of devastating defeat* and yet still end on an upswing that makes me excited for the next one.

* Not a spoiler, I think, that Napoleon defeats the Prussian army, since that's also just. History.

I had a good time reading this book. I adore the characters and the worldbuilding.

This was an excellent continuation of the Temeraire story but all I can think about after finishing it is how violent and abusive the story is to non-human, non-dragon animals. It makes it really hard to sympathize with the plight of the dragons (much less their human masters) when you see how horrific life is for the animals suffering at their hands. It wouldn't have been a problem if the book seemed to be trying to make a point about this, but I did not get that impression. This bad aftertaste has made it very hard to get myself to read the next volume. I wonder if this is why I ALWAYS end up quitting this series around this point. This is my third-plus attempt at a full read-through...

Another great addition to the series. This one flew by, and I think did a good job of displaying more of the brutal realities of war.

The battles are really emotionally draining, but the ongoing discussion between Laurence and Temeraire about duty v. justice and the treatment of dragons is very good.
