I keep hoping I'm going to find a book by this author that matches my love for his works Early Riser and Constant Rabbit. Shades of Grey is another one that's not it for me. It's overly long and convoluted, though still very readable. The world is creative and quirky, like in my other favorite books of his, and there's a bit of commentary on today's politics and social norms woven into this Future Earth story. 

But the main character is kind of a dope, mostly just oblivious until it's (repeatedly) too late and he (repeatedly) walks into pretty transparent traps. No one is very likeable and while the main character does grow, the others suddenly change loyalties in ways that I think are supposed to speak to the fickle and ignorant natures of these future humans, but mostly just seem like unsettled character development.
