4 stars

worthy of four stars despite having such a hard time reading it. It was groundbreaking when everything came full circle. A fabulous concept to twist!

“Nothing,” [he] says sharply. “A mistake.”

Ugh, spectacular and (somewhat) well worth the struggle. I recommend this deeply.

The writing style was good, but the plot twist was super unnecessary. I do not like when people try making religious horror-thriller-whatever.

I don't know what to say about this book. I appreciate the effort and thought behind it; I can see how the concept can be appealing; and I must admit it does make you question and wonder what it has in pocket for you; however, I didn't feel anything while reading. I wasn't awed, scared, on the edge of my seat. I wasn't emotional, tense, or anything else. The ending was underwhelming. The one thing I enjoyed most is knowing something is wrong from the first few sentences while the main character is unassuming. This eerie looming feeling was nice.

That was an unexpected turn of events, lol.

While reading this story, it started giving off some major 'Stepford Wives' vibes, which is cool cause I love that book.

Then it started to remind me of that 1961 Twilight Zone episode, 'It's a Good Life', the one where the entire town has to think happy thoughts and please a 6-year-old little boy who can turn people into Jack-in-the-boxes and make their lives miserable.

Then, once I started picking up what Ms. Valente was putting down, it all made sense. Overall, I really liked it! It didn't blow me away, but it was definitely a great way to spend a couple of evenings before bed.

This is a super short story that will take most people just a couple of hours to read. I don't think it'll be for everyone, and some people may feel duped (as a few reviewers here already seem to), but I thought it was a great little story, and I would recommend it to people who aren't afraid of a little religion. Not preachy religion, which I can't tolerate, just subject matter...I really don't want to say too much. Really, it's so friggin short...just read the damn thing.
