This lush, unsettling horror novella may be the perfect late summer to early autumn read—and that’s all I’ll say! In just over 100 pages, this will linger with you much longer than it will take you to read.

A short novella that takes a winding path of Stepford Wives-esque antics before you get to the point: this is a retelling of Genesis, Adam and Eve before Eve. I don't mind the feminist take on it. But the reveal was kinda disappointing, made the ending predictable when you're following Sophia, not Eve. Before that though, it's really interesting with the pretty suburb setting, finding body parts in your house and yard. Too bad it didn't stick the landing.

Valente's stylized approach to novels, like any experimental art, is always striking and memorable, though this isn't one of the more successful experiments. The prose is luscious, the fairy-tale horror well executed, and nothing's really missing. It just also doesn't add up to anything greater than the sum of its parts. A lot of novellas are short novels. This one is a long short story.

What this book taught me is that I should trust my ability to read between the lines or interpret certain things, because I had a feeling where this is going in the first couple of pages but instantly dismissed it but I was right.

Anyway, the
biblical conclusion
will not appeal to everyone and I myself am a bit conflicted about how it all ended, but I really enjoyed Catherynne M. Valente's writing so I will see what else she has written.
