“Hello, Headmaster Ward.”

As a black girl this book had me so frustrated! I started this book about two years ago and stopped reading it half-way because I was just sooo pissed!!! But today I was like what the heck I’ll start it from the beginning and see how far I can get and ended up reading it in less than 24 hours! I need the author to write an extended epilogue after reading the ending of the epilogue because I need some Millie style revenge from the Housemaid by Freida McFadden!

I went through this book not trusting anyone really — I started to even distrust Devon’s mom! She was the only person who I had distrust with that ended up not being someone to look out for.

I loved this book. The incorporation of wealth, dark academia, and "subtle" racism.
Devon is my favorite character. I felt for him the entire book and felt so bad for him. He was just getting hit on all sides with no one to trust. (We stan "you know who btw" lol.)
I wanted to end up liking Chiamaka but I just didn't feel anything for her. I had no connection to her and found myself either bored or annoyed by her. She was extremely self centered and naive most of the time and only listened to herself. However I don't have to love every character to love the story. Can't wait to read more books from this talented author.
This is one of the only books marketed as "A combination of Get Out and ..." where I actually got the Get Out vibes. That comparison is so overused and misused and I am so tired of seeing it. I am pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this.

I've read this book in highschool and I remember loving it, however it didn't live up to the hype. Chiamaka was unlikeable and wasn't kind to anyone throughout the whole book. Devon was the saving grace, a sweet boy who cares for his ma and brothers.

This book pretend that it's a big social message on black lives however it starts as a realistic representation of racism in life and then turns it into this ridiculously massive plot that the entire country is against black people. That's where they lost me.

It feels like they try to fester a mindset of "everyone is against me" when that isn't a realistic thing to think. The overall feeling i got was "well, if you're not like me then you end up being bad" and if anything, by the end of the book, I felt they were trying to advocate a divide between races rather than bring them together!
