This book was okay. I seem to not really like the way the author writes their characters. Chiamaka seemed kind of like a caricature of the popular mean girl and her arc didn't seem very genuine idk. Devon was a little boring but better. I just think there were a few things introduced in his arc that I didn't understand why they were in there bc they didn't have any consequence for his arc nor were they properly resolved. The most blatant example was the whole plot line about his father. We didn't even learn what he got the death penalty for nor did it have any impact on Devon's arc or the plot. His arc felt unrefined.
The story telling felt clunky. At parts I was really bored and the end was really rushed. The plot twist was predictable and the ending felt unearned. It was like the author didn't really know how to end the story.
Overall I think "Where Sleeping Girls Lie" was a better written story with a more cohesive plot and more interesting characters and also told better. I think the author improved a lot from one book to the next so I hope they tackle the theme of systemic racism again soon when they have grown a little more as an author. I think they have the potential to make it really impactful when they can build a better story to frame it well. I am really excited for their next releases.
