Several reviewers have said this book is a mash up between Gossip Girl and Get Out and after reading it myself, I concur!
An anonymous texter is wreaking havoc at a private school during Chiamaka and Devon's final year there. What's odd is, it seems to be only them being targeted, but why?
Not gonna lie this book had its ups and downs for me because sometimes the writing style started losing me and the characters would bother me but the premise of this book had me hooked. Though I wanted to get off the ride at points, it kept pulling me back in with the promise of finding out just who Aces was. And when I found out who it was....whoa Nelly! I went careening straight to the end of the book because I had to know the how, when, where and whys!
The main characters had a lot going on, each having their own version of self loathing due to various uncontrollable attributes. Though I may have thought them to be annoying at times, I appreciated how the author showcased these characters because it definitely makes the book relatable to its target audience.
Racism, classism and struggles with sexuality were the heavy hitters in this book. The gaslighting was intense throughout this novel!! I wanted to punch some of these characters because the audacity!! Then when the story is unraveled and you find out what is really happening? Would not be surprised if it were loosely based on true stories.
I'm happy with how the epilogue played out and can't say I was sad when I found out that 🤐 kicked rocks. Though the writing could have used some finessing at times, happy I stayed on the ride until the end.

It took me a little bit to get into this book but once I did the story really took off. I was not expecting it to be as dark or horrific as it was. It reminded me a lot of the movie Get Out and the commentary about institutionalized racism was poignant and timely. Devon and Chiamaka were definitely complex characters but some of the choices they made made me want to bang my head against a wall because I knew things weren’t going to go their way. But I liked the way the story ended, especially the epilogue.
