it started off kinda boring, with the tone of the writing making it seem like another YA high school ~mystery~ book. then the middle part happened and it was SO good. i couldn't put it down.
and then the ending is rushed, nothing gets explained or detailed, and we close off with a fast-forward that still didn't answer anything.
so yeah. conceptually, this is very much like a cross between get out and gossip girl. except its worst parts were just like GG, with the teen drama and the unsatisfying ending, and its best being exactly like get out - so much so that i think even comparing the book to the movie is a total spoiler, because if you've seen the movie you'll understand the book from a mile away. so many plotlines were dropped with no explanation i legit wondered if my copy was missing chapters.
it was entertaining but i can't say i'm not disappointed, if anything because the hype has been immense.

Get out meets gossip girl! I thought about DNFing this book at first but I heard so many good things about it that I just want to keep going to see if it was worth it, and let me tell you the last 100 pages was so worth it! That ending was so good I loved, and especially the epilogue! DAMN!
It deals with being black, queer, and storylines like sex, lies, and fighting back against racism! Its so good! if anything do it for these 4 words: black queer dark academia!

This was probably more of a 2 for me, but I am going with the 3 b/c I read it as an audio book and audio books almost always rate lower for me. I have to think had I read this book it would probably have been more of a 3.
This book is DARK!! The hatred is palpable. I had to laugh, half in jest, whole in earnest when I read the author's notes at the end and she said she wrote this during a very dark time in her life; that was really clear! This content makes my heart break and feel sick all at once. That this is reality for so so so many people today is just beyond atrocious.
