The good: Finished it in two days, could barely put it down. Author succeeded in making the thriller part work. It was genuinely tense and scary at certain parts.

The bad:
All the betrayals got cartoonish eventually
. I don’t like labeling dark stories trauma porn but in this case it’s quite apt. What’s particularly frustrating is that the author’s need to pile misfortune after misfortune on the leads led to lack of any satisfying character development for the leads. It’s a shame because the book had such an intriguing premise.

That said, this is her first book, and she does know how to make a reader turn page after page, so I’ll probably still try her other work.

Loved this book ! The characters are flawed but thats why i loved them so much and wanted them to win so bad . The ending was so satisfying to me . I wish I read this book sooner.

This is the first thriller with black characters I have read and let’s just say that now I am OBSESSED. I love the way we discover the characters, their shortcomings and their past gradually. Chiamaka, at the end of the book, had stolen my heart with her determination and assertiveness (I got a thing for bossy and smart girls). And Devon and Terrel ( at the end) almost killed me with their cuteness !

I also checked what the characters look like and WOW they are exactly how I imagined them : PERFECT!

i'm actually mindblown, this is beyond incredible. at first this irked me a little because it didn't feel like an accurate representation of high school behavior, but the more i read the more it became clear that this story, and the behavior of the characters within it, is a lens through which the audience is forced to face the institutionalized racism in the education system (primarily private education). as someone who want to a private high school that was quite literally founded so that Black students could not attend, this was a challenging and deeply important read.

i'm so insanely impressed that the author is a senior in college (at the time she published this novel)??? ace of spades doesn't just highlight the racism and classism that exists in the education system, it also is a story with compelling morally grey characters and a layered plot--and i cannot wait to read more Àbíké-Íyímídé's work in the future!

Other than a miscalculation from one of the leads concerning a plan, this is plotted really well.

I this it's a very good book. It seems very messed up but I think it shows how messed up the world is/can be.

For me it was a bit of a slow read because I couldn't get into it but towards the end (like end of part 2 and part 3) I was very much interested.
