We read this at the library Storytime today. I like the message: even if things don't go as planned, you can have a great day if you are with a person you love.
Good picture book on how everything doesn't always go right but it's okay because I'm with you.

Beautiful! Love the mother-daughter relationship! :)
Read this when I filled in for the Tiny Hands Art Class/Storytime. They were doing collages that day and this was an example of illustrations done in collage.
Sweet sweet story. Love how the kiddo learns coping mechanisms like taking a deep breath and letting it out, instead of rushing to anger!
Ava and her mom love Saturday. They look forward to Saturday all week, as it’s the one day they get to spend together. But THIS Saturday doesn’t go at all as planned. At each stop along the way something goes amiss, and Ava and her mom grow more and more disappointed. Finally they head home, where they realize that the true magic of Saturday is just being together.
There’s something magic about Mora’s work. Her illustrations are captivating, and the text grabs you-perfect word choice, great flow, capturing the “small moments”. Definitely worth a read and a reread!

I loved Thank You, Omu, last year (well deserved Caldecott honor) and now that Oge Mora has duplicated the same magic here I think it's officially safe to say that she's one of my favorite picture book authors :)
I have frequently been asked by preschool teachers for picture books on dealing with disappointment and this one fills that niche perfectly. A warm, joyful story about the one day each week that a mother and daughter can spend together and what happens when their carefully laid plans and routines are thwarted. Loved the vibrant, friendly city setting, the acknowledgement that some parents have to work a less-than-ideal schedule, and the calendar on the end papers (my kid and I looked at it and talked about it for several minutes). Perfect for older preschool story times (puppets and a cancelled story time are part of the plot!), great for one on one reading as well. Highly recommended for ages 4-8.
