What an interesting book that challenged my beliefs in some ways, and affirmed me in others. I wanted to pick up something mind-stimulating, and this had the right amount of dosage, without being overwhelming. A good introduction on the topic of Effective Altruism.

Will update my review again later on.

Fascinating, provocative, and satisfying. I found a lot of the ideas proposed in this book to be very compelling, and I definitely think they'll have a strong influence on how I approach money and charitable giving going forward.

Although most of Singer's arguments were highly persuasive, I wasn't convinced by his defense of capitalism (pg. 50). I also wish he'd backed up his support of veganism a little more thoroughly; though he put a lot of effort into quantifying the harm reduction that comes from eating less meat, he didn't make any effort to compare that to the potential environmental and social harms of increased consumption of the foods that many vegans use to replace meat (quinoa, almonds, soy, etc.). This is a blind spot that always frustrates me in pro-veganism arguments, and given how thoroughly Singer addressed the potential consequences, both positive and negative, of many of the other ethical choices for which he advocates, I was hoping he'd finally be the person to give me a satisfying answer to this question. But the question remains unresolved.

Other than that, though, I felt like Singer justified his philosophy pretty rigorously, and I also appreciated the frankness with which he discussed its limitations and counterarguments. I feel like this book gave me some really useful tools for thinking through the long-term choices that I make about my life, challenging me to live more ethically and helping me to think more clearly about the privilege and power I can leverage to make a difference in the world.
