I really went back and forth with this book. If I wasn’t reading it for a book club, I may not have finished the book. The middle drags because all the characters make rather dumb decisions. Also, I struggle with books where a majority of the characters are unlikable. Hen is the only character I liked from beginning to end.

Still, I’m glad I finished the book. The ending paced far better, and the twists, while a bit tropey, were interesting. I wished we had seen the fallout with a couple of the tertiary characters more, but I only ever liked Hen so I didn’t mind focusing on her at the end.

2.5 stars

When Hen and Lloyd move to a new home, it cements a new start for them both. Hen has finally on medication for her bi-polar that keeps her stable. But when they meet their next door neighbours, their perfect life, and Hen's stability, begin to deteriorate. 3 stars

The first part is slow, and I wasn’t sure if I’d continue, but I pushed through because I was curious where it would go. I’m so glad I did! The pacing picked up after the halfway mark, and the final twist completely blew my mind. I definitely didn’t see that coming. While I was leaning towards a 3-star rating initially, the unexpected turn of events in the last part bumped it up. The audiobook version kept me hooked, and I couldn’t stop listening. Overall, a gripping psychological thriller with a heart-stopping conclusion!

My very first book from the library after it reopened (after closing at the beginning of the pandemic) was Eight Perfect Murders by this author – I absolutely loved it. Review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4837669929

So...

When this same author’s book, this one, was donated to our Little Free Library Shed, I was over the moon!

Oh my goodness, I couldn’t wait to read it.

And...

I waited the 3 days for it to be quarantined...

And then...

I anxiously opened it to begin reading...

And…

Well, he definitely knows how to write a psychological thriller.

Is it fast paced? Check.

Creepy? Check.

Dark? Check.

Twisted? Check.

Strange? Check.

Zany? Check.

Outlandish? Check.

Out there? Check.

Surprise ending? Depends on how invested you are in the characters.

Worth your time? Well? That is up to you.

Are you up for this one?

This was fun to read ! Okay it's not the first thing you might say when you finish a thriller, but it was enjoyable ! Though I did guess the plot twist just before the end of the first part (there were three in total) I was still excited all along to see if I were right or not ! The characters were interesting, complex and believable, and I liked delving into their dark side. There were some moments that dragged a little, and I was hoping that by the end the story would be more thrilling. But still, I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to read more of Peter Swanson's work !

i really liked The Kind Worth Killing by this author but this was sooo boring. not a thriller or even really a mystery? we literally find out everything by like chapter 2 and then its just blah blah until the world's dumbest twist. snooze

The book kept me intrigued, but some parts were just really disturbing.
