Overall, the story is simple and the writing style makes the read quite enjoyable, but some plot holes and the abrupt ending spoiled everything and left a big of a sour taste in my mouth.

A lot was happening but the central mysteries did not progress much
I had been meaning to read this book for some time and am sorry to say I found it rather disappointing. Not only was I unable to connect with any of the characters, but I honestly didn't particularly like any of them, either (except the Aunt. She was kind of adorable in a bumbling but proud way). The premise also seemed a bit artificial and contrived for my tastes, especially when the whole basis of the book is on a Big Super Secret no one was particularly good at keeping, which just makes endless frustration and distrust of the main character even more annoying. I have seen way too many other stories seamlessly blend magic and secrets and casts with interesting and well rounded characters - this one just isn't able to stand up to the competition.
Interesting premise! I don’t usually love books where a man has to swoop in and save the woman, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
