Loved it. Raw and immersive, utterly spellbinding, hard hitting, gritty, frustrating (Imelda is loathsome with absolutely no redeeming factors), and brilliant. Not for the faint hearted. Martina Cole is now firmly on my list of favourite authors.
I've read a couple now and have a couple more of MC's to read. I think I prefer more of a dialogue in a book more than narrative.
I'm starting to feel a lot of repetition it seems.
It was an ok book.
Very drug, prostitute and mobster heavy, what MC does best.

What a disagreeable cast of characters. First, I didn't read it - I listened to it. Second, I listened to the abridged version, not unabridged. So it read like a Readers Digest version of a family saga... of the worst family in Britain. Are there any heroes? I dunno, Mary maybe? The cast, the story, and the setting represent the absolute worst of British culture. It makes "Trainspotting" seem like Paddington Bear.
Anyway, If you like Guy Richie films but could do without the ironic humor, then this book is for you.

I liked the story but the writing was quite repetitive. If it had been 200 pages shorter, it would have packed a better punch!
It seems I make a habit of starting a new year with a disappointing read.
This has been on my shelf forever, and I should have just donated it ages ago! Very long winded, a lot of spelling it out for you and just repetitive.
Has the bones of a good book but just wasn't my cup of tea.

I liked the book which spanned over a number of years in three smaller books. However I also found as others have the writer seemed to say over and over again the same things and got very repetitive. In the end I was glad to finish it.
