Never thought I’d be on the brinks of fainting while reading a short story dealing with amputation 😷.

An overall well written collection with a very memorable and famous short story, "Morphine".

Noore arsti märkmed on kohustuslik kõigile tulevastele arstidele. Ja küllap ei tee "Morfiumigi" lugemine halba, kuigi see on ilmselt hea lugemien kõigile.

Solid collection of short stories that paint an interesting picture of early 1900s Russia. The stories are more disjointed than I would have liked. They aren't fully independent of each other but they don't feel totally like part of the same narrative either. Overall somewhat enjoyable.

In a collection of short stories inspired by the author’s medical experience, a newly-qualified doctor finds his feet at a remote outpost on the eve of the Russian Revolution. Bulgakov’s black humor and evocative prose hang a guiding lamp for everyone who has suffered from impostor syndrome—or who just loves to hear a gory tale from an old friend.

“Forty-eight days ago I qualified ‘with distinction;’ but distinction is one thing and hernia is another. Once I watched a professor operating on a strangulated hernia. He did it, while I sat in the amphitheater. And I only just managed to survive…” (21)
