This is a book I’ve come back to a few times now. Every time I start, I am filled with wonder, and every time I finish, I am filled with grief and with love. It’s such an odd story - so unlike others both in its prose and its content, but I love the way in which it celebrates nature and its wonders, and the way it subtly weaves philosophy into its dialogues. Definitely a deeply impactful book!

Starts off really strong and then gets VERY slow. Weirdest pacing I’ve ever encountered in a novel

Beautifully written, lyrical and highly imagistic, with the feel of deep knowledge or folk stories. A man and his daughter live alone near a mountain, the last of mankind. We do not know for sure why humanity has died out, but these two remain, living in harmony with nature. The girl's father teaches her all that he can, knowing that there will be a time when she has to survive without him. Sadly, that time comes sooner than he would have liked, and the girl finds herself alone, away from home. As she makes the dangerous journey back to her home, racing against winter, an unexpected companion joins her for a journey that will become lore, a final chapter for humankind.
