I absolutely loved this warm and cozy space tale. I very rarely read sci-fi, and never would have picked it up if my friend hadn’t recommended it to me. But I’m so glad I did, because Becky Chambers’ writing is just so soft and enveloping, and her characters are so delicately drawn that you feel like they’re your friends.
This novella details the work and discoveries of a group of scientists in space. It’s a loving catalogue of the day to day work of science. There’s no major plot, really. Not a lot of action or tension. What you get instead is a chance to feel like you’re fully part the team. You cheer for their discoveries like they’re your own. You fear for their failures and future with a dread that’s palpable within your own chest. And you hope. You really, really hope.
I did something I never, ever do: I listened to this book in audio format only. And it was lovely. I finished the book while I was walking my dogs this morning, and found myself so filled with emotion at the ending that I started crying. I loved this book.
I can’t wait to read A Psalm for the Wild-Built!

This read gave me an existential tummy ache but it was so worth it
I was into it until the end. Also lost me on the discussion of chirality. How could achiral life handle diastereomers?
Beautiful, soulful writing. Perhaps among the most lovely and heart centered narrative voices I've read within the scifi space. A pleasure to read.

I found this book to be very enlightening when it comes to the realities of space travel — the opportunities, limitations, dangers, potential, the amount of time and planning involved. It also raises some major philosophical questions about if we should do it at all, and for what aims or purpose, and what our exploration would mean for other life forms that may exist in the universe. The writing is very science-y and technical, and I think there could’ve been more focus on the human toil of the astronauts, but I found it very interesting overall.
