Thought provoking and emotionally compelling. One of the best sci-fi stories I've read.

Help! The kind of books that are my type are long dark plot-driven science-fiction dystopias. I swear.
Then why do I love so much Becky Chambers' short hopeful character-driven cosy science-fiction stories?
I am at a loss. Except for the science fiction part, the genre is not my cup of tea. And yet, her stories reach me so well, in an effortless and moving way. Please, someone explain to me how the hell she does that.
At first I thought A psalm for the wild-built might have taken me off-guard, so that it ended up being much better than expected. Ok, accidents can happen. But then I read A prayer for the crown-shy with calibrated expectations, and again, I loved the book.
Now it is the turn of To be taught, if fortunate, which turned out to be so compelling that I find myself immersed in some kind of identity crisis.

Fast paced, beautifully written, and it kept me hooked the whole time.
Creo que es de mis preferidos de Chambers, quizá por que como biòloga, su argumento y sus personajes y las ideas que transmite han resonado muy bien conmigo.
This book is a perfect long hug from someone who knows you deeply and wants to see you be your best self. It captures something beautiful and ineffable— the wonder of discovery and both the importance and responsibility of exploration, particularly poignant as humanity charts its path forward. Was also impressed and appreciative, as an earth scientist, of how the author captured the process of science, both the tedium and the joy.

Okay so almost everything about this was delightful, but what an annoying cop-out of an ending. I don't think that level of indecision / deferring responsibility is really in character for any of the crew as written, it felt more like the author was unwilling to commit to their fates.
