Clarktech: human long term torpor, soma forming. The book does not go into detail on how fast communications and travel are though both take time enough that the crew must go into torpor while traveling. The book also does not discuss power generation for the space ship.

Context: this was chosen to read while also reading Sarrah Wynn-Williams’ book Careless People so I wouldn’t become a total misanthrope.

Cozy hard science fiction! I think I may end up with a Becky Chambers library.

This is a delightful first person narrative. There is a balance of genders nationalities, and orientation. There is even ace representation!

Really though it is delightful as it portrays a possible way for humans to explore space and do it in such a way that is mindful of other life forms. Is it pie in the sky? Perhaps, but if humans an survive the next few centuries who knows.

Ms Chambers writes vivid descriptions of her worlds and dives deep into the character of her narrator. Other characters are not as throughly described as the reader only has the knowledge that the narrator has. Also the book passes the B-W test with flying colours.

Also the book fulfilled the reason I read it. I’m only slightly more misanthropic than I was 8 months ago.
