Sadly, this was kind of boring until about 50%. It got a little better, but I’m glad it was just a novella.

Easily the least hopeful of Chambers' books, but in some ways more impressive for how it still manages to land delicately in a small island of hope.

Perhaps the most realistic of Chambers' stories too - a spacefaring fantasy tempered by what we know of the universe and our species' incapacity to ever take the broader view for more than two weeks.

I teetered on 4.5 stars because the final monologue does in some ways yank the subtext into text a little too firmly. But ultimately I felt as emotional at the finish as I have with the majority of her work, so the 5 feels right.

2,5 favorite Becky Chambers book I've read, but I think I'm going to have to give up on her :,) they always feel like they are missing something. No tension, very flat characters. Meh.
