rosemarieshort's review against another edition
4.0
This is such a great, old school romp through space.
The writing style has certainly aged, and it's obvious that the original format was a more serialized version. However this didn't dull my enjoyment of the novel, with the characters totally winning me over. Calm, tactically minded Jay Kalam, and wine / gourmet food loving Giles Habibula completely had me captivated. Whilst the character of John Star himself is a little lacking, I can forgive this, as it allows for the immersion of yourself into the character and, therefore, the story.
The plot is admittedly nothing new. However I almost never found myself dragging through pages. My only criticism would be the ending which, no spoilers, was a little underwhelming, in my opinion. I'd love to read the rest in the series now and that is my greatest form of compliment.
