James Spader recommended this book ages ago on a talk show once, I picked it up, and never regretted it. I spent many years reading it little by little and recently I came close enough to the end that I decided to finish it, though I'm sure you don't have to be as obsessive as me about the way that you consume this book.

It was charming and informative and smoother than anything I could have expected from a nonfiction book like this. He had an amusing way of writing that made me want to write more and a great sense of humor. I know more about the clam trade than I ever expected to know, let alone wanted to, but I feel better for it rather than worse.

My father was alive when I started reading this, and now he's not.
