I would have liked this book better would have been fast paced, for my the problem was on the second part, it was too heavy full with nothing most of the time.

I read this book because people recommend it for the ones who were still grieving the poppy war, so I couldn't help but compare the two all the time. Surprisingly, this book stood as its own, but Zhu and Rin really were the same but different at the same time. Their determination was the same but it felt like Zhu's greed was trying to be excused whereas Rin 's was just embraced.

I believe it would have been better had it been a duel pov: Ouyang and Zhu 1st person each. Because the way povs are writing in this books are really weird, you won't know who pov you're reading until like the character is addressed, and there were so many unnecessary povs, like esen, baoxiamg and even ma (Although I know people might disagree I feel like if Zhu comprehend her so well her body language would have told the same through Zhu's eyes). It was kind of confusing.

I don't remember a lot of this book, only the big points like the monastery or the confrontations but if you ask me about any other thing I won't be able to answer because there was too many useless information around. If it had been more plot driven I think it would have been better because trying to depict so many characters didn't work at all

Sometimes when I hear a bunch of hype for a book, I find that it makes my expectations so high that I can be nothing but disappointed when I read it. Thankfully, She Who Became the Sun well-earned its praise. I was blown away by how immersed in the time and setting it was, as well as the carefully-considered jumps between character perspectives. All of the characters were undeniably bad people... but they were also so easy to understand and sympathize with. And don't even get me started about all the deliciously complicated gender stuff happening for Zhu and Ouyang. I Love This Book, and I can't wait to read the sequel.

What an incredible ride. Born into a family of peasants living through a famine, as a girl Zhu has little value to her family. However, once they all die of starvation, Zhu chooses a different fate. She takes on her brothers identity and travels to a monastery, hoping to be taken on as a novice. Zhu refuses to accept her fate as a starving peasant girl and instead chooses a future in which she can become truly great.

This was so much fun. A little bit of a slow pace, but the sheer tenacity that Zhu displays again and again drew me in. There is some great queer representation, and in the characters of Zhu and a eunuch general the author does an amazing job of displaying different types of non binary genders. Loved this so much! 4.5/5

So, I'm not a fantasy reader, and I think that weighs heavily in my review. If you're used to and like reading historical and/or fantastical novels with lots of characters that span lots of time, you will probably like this. I'm personally much more interested in reading close character studies where not much happens, so this wasn't really my cup of tea.

I persevered because Natalie Naudus, and of course the hype. And also it takes a lot for me to DNF a book, so I just pushed through.

Some things I wasn't into:
  • As I alluded to before, I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters
  • This might also be a genre (/part one in a series) thing, but there are so many events that happen one after another that I didn't feel were super necessary to building the story. This and the multiple time jumps made the story seem both rushed and too long.
  • So many of the pivotal moments are glossed over? Like I didn't even realize that a lot of them had happened until after?
  • The above also fed into my lack of conviction over the characters relationships with each other. There were really only one or two relationships that felt fleshed-out and genuine to me, and these were the rare ones where we spent a lot of time with both characters together. The main character and their love interest was completely blank for me, I didn't feel any of the build up and had no investment in their relationship.

All this said, it's a "fine" story for me. I did like the writing style, despite my thoughts on how the story comes together. The steamy scene that has received a ton of social media attention is incredibly random in the context of the book but like, lives up to the hype and I could have done with more of that honestly? Well done. I really appreciated the book in audio form for its accurate pronunciations of words/names I would read wrong in my head, and I'd love to read more historical fiction focusing on this area of the world.
