Essential US History.

Anna takes us on a lifetime journey of three women who have been cast aside from history in the shadow of their famous sons. While they are all happy to do so because of the strong and dignified women they are, this book gives them their due in both how they lives their own lives and how they passed down to their children and grandchildren the lessons of perseverance and love. Each mother had their own unique experiences and hardships but each one had to bury their son (or multiple children). You will tear through this as we take a look at each one in vignettes tied together. Great writing - these women and the author will stay with you.

The book was well written and insightful. That being said, I think it provided more insight as to the circumstances faced by black mothers in general than it did on the lives of these three specific mothers. This of course stems from the lack of information regarding the lives of these three women.

A great book, just not exactly what I was expecting based on the title.

Beautifully written! A must read!

Super informative and so many quotable sections. The writer does a terrific job of balancing the loving aspect of Black motherhood whilst captivating the heartbreak many go through. There is the right amount of passages that inform us of the horrors that they underwent without bombarding us with too much trauma (strategically placed).

I think the biggest issue I had with this book is that there is not enough information out there for the book to be what it's intended to be. It could have been about 100 pages shorter. The middle third felt like a history lesson on MLK, Malcolm X and James Baldwin. In that section, the mothers were rarely mentioned outside of, "she must have felt [insert generic emotion] about her son's accomplishment", or "he called/wrote to his mother and told her about [event]." The last chapter was also mostly statistics that really had nothing to do with the rest of the book. It all just felt very disjointed. It was also either overly explained or barely explained in some sections. Often, it was just a list of facts. It felt very much like a book report in some places. It was relatively obvious that there's not enough information about Alberta, Louise, and Berdis to fill an entire book. While I'd love to learn more about the women and their lives, this book did not meet expectations in terms of what it intended to be.

A Must Read for All!!

An amazing story of three women in history often overlooked. The author beautifully dictates these women’s truths. She writes in such an intelligent and concise way that I couldn’t put this book down. Throughout the book I found myself feeling heartbroken over the lives they lived and at the same time, so proud of the strength they showed. It’s a absolute must read for all. Thank you Anna Malaika Tubbs for bringing forth the stories of these women’s lives. It’s an inspirational read
