Maybe it’s bc I’m not in the mood? I’m looking for more angst and slow burn, this comes with a marriage already in place. Not what I’m looking for right now.

A new kinda Pam Godwin vibe here, and I loved it! I've never really given pirate books a thought at all, but since I love PG and her writing, I figured why not!

Bennett Sharp is a female pirate who shunned her proper upbringing and followed in her dad's footsteps. She is secretly married to Priest, who betrayed her and she hasn't seen him for 2 years. Bring on the British Navy and Lord Ashley Cutler, a notorious pirate hunter, and things take a sharp turn.

Lots of angst and some truly dark moments, so if that's not your thing, you'll want to steer clear of this one.

4.5 + for sure!

Why are none of y'all talking about how the hero in this book actually raped the heroine. I'm not talking about consensual non-consent, I mean she said stop, he kept going and then proceeded to leave her violated and crying. BUT OH... he felt bad after and she forgave him so it's okay. You can't even expect me to believe it's in Bennett's character to forgive him when she killed a man who tried to rape her at the start of this book. Literally creating character development for Bennett to not stand for that type of assault to have her fall for the man who assaults her. Make it make sense.

I feel like this is also perpetuating the idea that women in relationships can't be violated by their partner. Or that if they are, it's normal and you should just deal with it. Which is disgusting and not true.

I was rooting for the heroine from page one of this book, but to watch her get sexually assaulted in some way by every villain in this book just to have her have a happily ever after with a man who is no better... no thanks.

Ok so all I know about this book was that it had pirates and that was enough for me to pick it up.

It has Black Sails vibes and pacing fast and would be 3 stars if poly relationship was done better.

For 60% of book is all Ashley and Bennett enemies to lovers relationship, she and Priest and Priest and Ashley is all tell no show. I just couldn't connect with that part of relationship, overall ok.

This was a powerful love story with steamy moments that made my toes curl. The action was intense, and when things got dark, it was bloody and without remorse. The end took a pleasurable twist that I didn’t see coming and will be thinking about for a very long time.

An ending I didn’t see coming. I’m glad I didn’t read the novella first as it gave a completely different take on this book. It was deliciously dark, maybe a bit darker then necessary but these are pirates and some have no boundaries. As usual Pam Godwins writing is exceptional and did a great job bringing Bennett to life with her two handsome men.

The atmosphere of this book was impeccable. I don't find myself pulled towards pirate books (I watched the first Pirates of the Caribbean and didn't care enough to continue), but I enjoyed the setting of this one. I did find that it was a bit more drawn out than I'd like, but I understand that these taboo/dark romances need a bit more time to bring the relationship around and make it something the reader can support and believe in.
